So, when are you going to quit acting?

Actors have to deal with a lot of questions. Stupid ones, annoying ones, rude ones. But the one that I find most rude is: so when are you going to quit acting?
How much longer do you think you will act for?
When are you going to quit and do something else?

There are many variations of this question, but they are all annoying. I have never went up to my postman and asked how much longer he was going to do his job. Or asked my doctor how many more years he is going to give it. Acting is an occupation, not some gamble that you enter for a few years and then quit when your numbers don’t come up.

While there is a large element of luck to being an actor, being a working actor is something that takes time and effort. Questions from family members about ‘doing other things’ are not going to make anyone happy.

As they told me in drama school: it is a marathon, not a sprint. So, once and for all, when am I going to quit acting? Never. Thanks anyway.
